Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
