Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
